Heart Transplant Surgery
Heart transplant surgery is performed for patients with severe heart failure when other medical treatments no longer work. The heart is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to all organs. When the heart becomes too weak to function properly, it can lead to life-threatening complications.
Common conditions that may lead to heart transplant include coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart defects, and severe heart valve disease. Patients with advanced heart failure often experience symptoms such as extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, swelling in the legs, and difficulty performing even simple daily activities.
In heart transplant surgery, the diseased heart is removed and replaced with a healthy donor heart. The donor heart usually comes from a deceased person whose organs were donated after brain death.
The surgery is a very complex procedure and typically takes around 4 to 6 hours. The patient is placed on a heart-lung bypass machine which temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during the operation. Surgeons carefully remove the damaged heart and attach the donor heart by connecting major blood vessels.
Once the new heart is in place and blood flow is restored, the heart usually begins beating normally. After surgery, the patient is closely monitored in the intensive care unit.
Recovery from heart transplant requires careful medical management. Patients must take immunosuppressive medications to prevent organ rejection. Regular monitoring tests such as heart biopsies, echocardiograms, and blood tests are performed to ensure the transplanted heart remains healthy.
Heart transplantation has given many patients a second chance at life. With proper care and medical follow-up, many recipients are able to live active and fulfilling lives for many years after the surgery.
