Colorectal Cancer Treatment in India

  • Colorectal Cancer Treatment
Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the colon or rectum, which are parts of the large intestine. It usually develops from small growths called polyps that form on the inner lining of the colon. Over time, some of these polyps may become cancerous.
This type of cancer is more common in people over the age of 50, but it can occur in younger individuals as well. Risk factors include a family history of colorectal cancer, unhealthy diet, obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and inflammatory bowel diseases.
Symptoms of colorectal cancer may include persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and a feeling that the bowel does not empty completely.
Doctors diagnose colorectal cancer using tests such as colonoscopy, CT scans, MRI scans, and biopsy. Colonoscopy is one of the most important diagnostic tools because it allows doctors to examine the inside of the colon and remove suspicious polyps during the procedure.
Treatment for colorectal cancer depends on the stage of the disease. In early stages, surgery is usually the main treatment. The surgeon removes the cancerous portion of the colon along with nearby lymph nodes to prevent the spread of cancer.
Chemotherapy may be recommended after surgery to destroy any remaining cancer cells. In rectal cancer cases, radiation therapy may also be used to shrink tumors before surgery or to prevent recurrence.
Modern treatments may also include targeted therapy, which focuses on specific molecules involved in cancer growth, and immunotherapy, which helps the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells.
Lifestyle changes such as healthy diet, regular exercise, and routine screenings play an important role in preventing colorectal cancer and detecting it early.
With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, colorectal cancer is highly treatable, and many patients achieve long-term survival and good quality of life.
